The fall of the Safavid state in 1135 AH / 1722 CE has long been a matter of enduring concern among scholars of Iranian history. It is evident that, although the relations and conduct of the Mughal Empire of India did not play a determinative role in the final decline of this dynasty, they nevertheless intensified the process of its weakening through four mechanisms: strategic rivalry over Kandahar, pressure on trade routes, the disruption of regional power equations, and the aggravation of internal Safavid crises. Simultaneously, with the flourishing of overland alternative trade routes across the Mughal realm and the redirection of the historic Silk Road toward southern ports, the revenues of the Safavid state experienced a marked decline. The extensive presence of Indian merchants (Banyans) in Iran, together with their usurious activities and the outflow of cash and coin from the country, further aggravated the Safavid financial crisis. With the mutual weakening of the two powers (the Mughal Empire and the Safavids) in the second half of the tenth century AH / seventeenth century CE, a power vacuum emerged in the east of the Iranian Plateau, which paved the way for the Hotaki invasion and ultimately the fall of Isfahan. The present study, grounded in library-based research and guided by the question of how the relations and conduct of the Mughal state of India affected the gradual weakening and fall of the Safavid state, is composed with a descriptive-analytical approach. It demonstrates that the relationship between Iran and Mughal India during the Safavid era constituted a dialectic of rivalry and interdependence, which—ultimately, by accelerating the decline of both powers—opened the way for the rise of the Afsharids and the consolidation of British colonial dominion over the Indian subcontinent
