To maintain her predominance and protect her interests in the region the British Empire went on great lengths and employed certain instruments and utilized well-defined patterns. Among the countries in the region Iran stood out as a significant force, for which reason, the British established special relations with it. The quality of Irano-British relations, however, depended on the power of the central government in Iran and was influenced by great power rivalries on the international scene as well. Assuming that foreign policy is comprised of constant and variable elements, it is immensely important to study British comportment, their policy pattern and preferred tools through the history as it can contribute to a more accurate understanding of its modern-day policies. The main question driving this article is what objectives did the British pursue and what patterns did they follow in their foreign policy in the Persian Gulf? The hypothesis is that Britain used a peculiar and rather unique pattern to spread its colonial rule and strengthen its hegemony in the region; it exerted its power on political, economic and military plains and exploited the local actors to further its goals in the Persian Gulf region. امپراتوری بریتانیا طی چند قرن از آغاز قرن هفدهم تا پایان قرن بیستم میلادی، قدرت برتر در خلیج فارس بود. انگلیس برای حفظ برتری قدرت و منافع خود در منطقه از هیچ کوششی فروگذاری نمی‌کرد و برای تأمین این اهداف، ابزارها و الگوهای مشخصی داشت. ایران یکی از کشورهای مهم منطقه بود که انگلیس از اوایل قرن هفدهم میلادی روابط ویژه با آن برقرار کرد. کیفیت این روابط به قدرت حکومت مرکزی در ایران بستگی داشت، علاوه بر اینکه تحت تأثیر تحولات و رقابت‌های بین المللی نیز بود. اگر بپذیریم که سیاست خارجی دارای عناصر مستمر و مداوم در کنار عناصر تغییرپذیر است، باید گفت که شناخت الگوهای رفتاری انگلیس و ابزارهای به‌کار رفته در طول تاریخ اهمیت خاص دارد و بررسی ریشه‌ها می‌تواند در فهم سیاست‌های امروز این کشور راهگشا باشد. سؤال اصلی پژوهش حاضر این است که اهداف و الگوهای سیاست خارجی امپراتوری بریتانیا و حضور این کشور در خلیج فارس چه بوده است؟ فرضیه این است که بریتانیا از الگوی ویژه و منحصر به‌فردی برای ایجاد و گسترش الگوی استعماری و هژمونیک منطقه‌ای خود بهره می‌برد و آن به‌کارگیری نیروهای مختلف سیاسی، اقتصادی و نظامی و استفاده از نیروهای منطقه‌ای و محلّی برای پیشبرد اهداف خود در منطقة خلیج فارس بود. https://www.hfrjournal.ir/article_87418_3f61015c148b46bdad9831a702d79e38.pdf
