The Dunbulid house, originally appointed by the Safavids to govern Khoy in Azerbaijan province, soon gained autonomy in its governance and became hereditary local governors of the region. Having followed the policy of the central government regarding the Ottomans, they defended the soil of Iran with all their power even during the decline of the Safavids. This article aims to study behavior of the Dunbulids in the post-Safavid period and the role they played in Iran-Ottoman relations. The findings show, under the Afshar rule, the Dunbulid emirs, despite their early efforts to drive out the Ottomans from Iranian territory, later rebelled against the tyranny of Nader Shah Afshar, while the Ottomans, taking advantage of the situation, were trying to improve their relations with the Dunbulids. It was underthe Zands thatthe Dunbulids were able to establish their own Khanate in the north-west of Iran bordering the Ottoman realm. Then, to avoidassault of both the Russian and the neighboring Khanates, the Dunbulids turned to the Ottomans who supported them in times of necessity to the possible extent. The adaptation of such a policy by the Dunbulids finally brought about the destruction of their local government by the Qajars.
