Avens Māsāhian (1864-1931). known as Mosa’ed-ol Saltaneh was one of the outstanding Armenians of Iran and one of the greatest statesmen and an important man of learning in the beginning of the 20th century. He studied in Tehran, Tabriz and Paris and on his return to Iran in 1884, he worked as the special translator of Nāser-Aldin Shāh. He was very successful in his scientific and diplomatic activities and he was promoted to the position of Iran’s minister in London. In his last mission, he served as the Iranian minister in Tokyo. Avenskhān who is considered as one of the first outstanding literary and scientific translators from English to Persian was also very active and brilliant in formal and official services and he was admired by everyone especially by his superiors. Among his other initiatives and activities, one may cite his attempts to create an independent Armenian state after the first world war. A number of outstanding researchers and politicians have admired him as a man of learning who was very conspicuous in his governmental services. Akio kāsam who was the first Japanse minister in Iran and who was a contemporary with Avenskhān and worked in Tehran when Avenskhān was in Tokyo, has written an admirable account of the activities of this Iranian-Armenian minister in his memories. In addition to governmental and diplomatic services, he taught law in Tehran’s political school and acted as a representative of the Armenians in the sixth majles of the national parliament of Iran. His last political position was acting as the head of the Iranian diplomatic envoy in Tokyo which lasted for one year till August 1931. He died on his way home from Tokyo to Tehran in khārrin in Siberia.
