Notwithstanding long historical ties the relations between Iran and Russia has been fraught with tensions, distrust and ambiguity. During the historical period of 1942-1979 it was the Cold War logic that determined the great power politics toward the third world countries such as Iran. Iran was not in good conditions after the Second World War and after the 28thMordad Coup, with support from the nascent great power the USA, managed to do away with the traditional clout of the British. Its proximity and significantly long borders with the USSR gave Iran a special weight in the political calculations of the United States and made it the scene of struggle between the two superpowers.
The current Article employs a descriptive-analyric approach and seeks to examine and explain the factors determining the foreign policy of the Shah towards the USSR and tries to assess the grounds for interaction and reasons for confrontation between the two countries. Only through such historical perspective can Russia be perceived in a proper way. Understanding Russia is without a doubt very important to (Iran’s) foreign policy.
