Abstract
Seljuk rule in Iran, as part of the Islamic world, began in the years 431 (AH). Being surrounded by other Islamic and Christian rules made them craft a painstakingly elaborate system for the management and organization of their relations with the neighbors; a system which is worth studying. A great Seljuk ruler of the era, Malik Shah I consummated the power and reach of the Seljuk Empire. The current research has concluded that religion was the determining factor in delineating the relations of the Seljuk Empire as a Muslim political rule.
A quick glance at the aggressive policies adopted by Malik Shah I against the Christian areas within the framework of Jihad, his treatment of local Shiite rulers and his attempts at approaching the Abbasid Caliphate suggests that religion enjoyed a relative superiority over other factors in determining the Seljuk foreign relations. It is worth mentioning that, on a micro level, these approaches on the part of Malik Shah reflected his personal religious convictions while the grand state of affairs was, to a great extent, defined by the Abbasid Caliphate, the the leader of the Islamic World.
