The vagueness of Iran situation in Genghis Khan Empire division and the emergence of the Mongol’s tetrad tribal groups (Uluses) brought about claims and rivalries on the issue of dominance over these regions. The most significant manifestation of the latter situation could be discerned in relations among the tribal groups rulers of Jochi with the central Court of Mongol (Quriltai)on one side, and then between them and IIkhanid rulers on the other side. The rulers of the Golden Horde were invoking a command of Genghis Khan on their entitlement to the conquest of Iran or parts of it and thus were endeavouring to materialize their claim while the Court of Mongol mentioned the conquest of Iran by joint forces of the Empire as a counterclaim for protecting its interests and confronting the claims made by Ulus Jochi.
Prior to the formation of IIkhanate rule, the competition and rivalries running between Ulus Jochi and the central Court of Mongol on the issue of dominance over Iran was gentle and inoffensive, bearing political functions. With the formation of IIkhanate rule, due to a range of considerations, the rivalries intensified and assumed military, economic and ideological features. The current article shall review the IIkhanate relations with Khans of Qipchaq Desert taking into consideration the background of the mentioned region’s rulers with the central Court of Mongol and with a focus on sovereignty claims over Iran.
