Prior to the establishment of the Royal Bank of Iran, almost all functions of this new institution as concerned credit and monetary aspects were being carried out by local money dealers and merchants. The entrance of the Royal Bank in the financial and economic arena of the State was in direct contradiction and conflict with the interests of merchants and money dealers considered financially and economically influential. Consequently, clash and hostile rivalries became inevitable particularly due to the reason that the new institution would not consent to anything less than full dominance over the financial and economic mainstreams. Local bankers from the other side had got involved in a survival struggle type of competition to avoid the inescapable economic bottlenecks created by the Royal Bank. Previously, Iranian money dealers were carrying out all monetary and credit transactions.
On the threshold of the establishment of the Royal Bank of Iran, the internal background and circumstances leading to the establishment of banking institutions in Iran were going through their final steps inter alia through the attempt by some merchants and money dealers to seek and attract the concurrence of the Qajar incumbents for establishing an Iranian national bank. The above mentioned trend failed to continue through the establishment of the Royal Bank and its rival, the Loan-Bank. Consequently, the crushing competition of these banks stunted any opportunity of establishing an Iranian bank for Iranian economic and trade community for the years to come.
